The death toll from an attack on a school in Iran’s south has risen to 85, with many of the victims being innocent children. The attack, reportedly carried out by US and Israeli forces, has sparked widespread condemnation and fears of regional war.

Iran’s judiciary said the attack on a girls’ elementary school in Minab, Hormozgan province, has killed 85 people, with rescue workers still clearing debris from the site. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned the strike, stating it had killed “innocent children” and vowing that the “crimes against the Iranian people will not go unanswered”.

The attack has drawn sharp criticism from Tehran, with Iran’s Mehr news agency reporting that at least two students were killed in another Israeli strike on a school east of Tehran. The international community is calling for restraint, with Bahrain announcing that all schools and universities would switch to distance learning until further notice.
