Nigeria: Bread prices: Bakers say flour cost hasn’t fallen enough to cut loaf prices

The Premium Breadmakers Association of Nigeria (PBAN) has refuted a viral social‑media claim that the price of a 50 kg bag of wheat flour has plunged to between N35,000 and N40,000. The post also accused bakers of “wickedly” refusing to lower bread prices despite the alleged drop.
In a statement issued by PBAN General Secretary Emmanuel Onyoh, the association called the claim false and a calculated attempt to incite the public against bakers who are “struggling to stay afloat.” Onyoh explained that, as of December 16 2025, a 50 kg bag of flour actually costs between N55,000 and N62,000 – depending on brand and source – far above the figures circulating online. While some millers recently announced a marginal N2,000 reduction per bag, the saving translates to only about N20 on a family‑sized loaf and is quickly absorbed by soaring costs of yeast, improvers, margarine, preservatives and other inputs.
Onyoh outlined the “hidden costs” driving the price floor:
PBAN said it has advised members to maintain quality standards while offering different loaf sizes to fit varied consumer budgets. The association assured the public that prices will be reduced only when a genuine, sustainable downward trend appears in the overall cost structure and the Nigerian economy.
