A heartbreaking incident marred New Year’s Day in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, after a residential fire claimed the life of an 11-year-old child. The fire broke out in a wooden house, leaving a family devastated as the new year began with grief instead of celebration. While firefighters were able to save properties worth millions of naira, the loss of a young life cast a dark shadow over the community.
The Yenagoa incident was part of a wave of fire outbreaks reported across different parts of the country during the festive period. In Abuja, a fire at a popular restaurant and recreational spot was quickly contained, preventing what could have turned into a major disaster in a busy area. Similar incidents were recorded in states including Lagos, Imo, Gombe, and Kwara, though swift emergency responses helped reduce damage and avoid further loss of life.
Authorities have once again urged Nigerians to be cautious, especially during celebrations and the dry harmattan season. They warned against leaving candles unattended, using fireworks carelessly, or keeping open flames indoors. The tragic death in Bayelsa serves as a painful reminder that small acts of negligence can have irreversible consequences, and that safety should always come before festivities.
