Authorities in Bauchi State have issued a stern warning to residents, particularly young people, against the dangerous act of climbing telecommunications masts to gain public or political attention.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Ahmed Wakil, revealed that the command had responded to three separate incidents in recent weeks where individuals attempted to climb masts, each claiming political motives.

The first case occurred on June 16, 2025, involving 22-year-old Adamu Salisu, popularly known as ‘Sarkin Malaman’ at Muda Lawal Market. He climbed a mast near Kofar Dumi Primary School, insisting he would not come down until Alhaji Bala Wunti declared his bid for governor.

Two days later, 35-year-old Usman Nanu also climbed a mast at the same location, demanding confirmation that Governor Bala Mohammed would run for president in 2027. Most recently, on June 29, 37-year-old Alkassim Saidu Yakubu scaled an MTN mast, vowing to remain there until the state’s Commissioner of Finance declared his intention to contest the next governorship election.

In all three cases, police intervened quickly, rescuing the men and taking them into custody for attempted suicide. Each of them reportedly expressed regret afterward and now faces profiling and possible legal action.

Police Commissioner Sani-Omolori Aliyu condemned the rising trend, calling it reckless and potentially harmful to both individuals and public safety. He urged parents, guardians, and community leaders to caution the youth and discourage such provocative behavior.

The Commissioner stressed that anyone contributing to acts that could disrupt peace in the state—whether directly or indirectly—will be investigated and prosecuted accordingly.
