HEFORSHE Music Movement and Fantanka Conclude Day One of Landmark Training on GBV and Toxic Masculinity

Baobab Hotel, The Gambia – The HEFORSHE Music Movement, in partnership with Fantanka, successfully concluded the first day of a groundbreaking two‑day training workshop aimed at equipping Gambian artists and creative industry players with deeper understanding and practical tools to address gender‑based violence (GBV) and toxic masculinity through their work.

The event, held at the Baobab Hotel, marks the first large‑scale training of its kind in The Gambia, bringing together musicians, producers, managers, and other art‑sector stakeholders for an intensive and highly interactive learning experience.

Day one featured expert-led sessions exploring the roots of GBV, unpacking harmful gender norms, and examining the role of the arts in shaping public attitudes. Participants engaged in open discussions, group exercises, and practical modules designed to help them integrate gender‑sensitive messaging into their music and creative projects.

Speaking at the opening, Mariama Jobarteh, Board Member of the HEFORSHE Music Movement and CEO of Fantanka, emphasized the importance of empowering artists as agents of social change. She highlighted the creative sector’s unique influence in shifting narratives and promoting healthier expressions of masculinity.

The workshop spearheaded by Dembo Jobarteh, Co‑Founder and CEO of the HEFORSHE Music Movement, underscored the organization’s commitment to fostering safer, more inclusive communities through the power of music and artistic expression.

Organizers described the turnout and engagement as “highly encouraging,” noting that this initiative represents a major step forward in mobilizing the arts to combat GBV nationwide.

The training continues today with hands‑on sessions and collaborative planning aimed at equipping participants with actionable strategies to advocate for gender equality within the industry and beyond.
