Former VP Tambajang declares intention to run for presidency

Gambia’s former vice president Fatoumatta Jallow-Tambajang has declared her intention to contest in the 2026 presidential election.
She confirmed her decision to The Point newspaper yesterday evening in a brief interview.
The former Vice President was earlier quoted by media reports to have disclosed her presidential bid at the Sahel Governance Forum on Wednesday, 30 July 2025, at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre in Bijilo. The forum focused on inclusive leadership and the role of women in politics.
Madam Tambajang, an advocate for gender equality and democracy, served as Minister of Women’s Affairs prior to the current dispensation in which she also served as vice president, having played a pivotal role in the post-2016 transition of The Gambia.
She continues to serve at the international realm, contributing to regional peace efforts, such as in the electoral dispute in Sierra Leone.
