EU backs digital system to track gov’t projects, boost transparency

The government of The Gambia, with support from the European Union, has launched a new digital tracking system designed to monitor national development projects in real time, marking a significant step toward strengthening transparency, accountability, and data-driven governance.
The web-based platform will track the implementation of the country’s Recovery-Focused National Development Plan (RF-NDP), enabling authorities to better assess progress, improve coordination, and ensure that policies deliver tangible results for citizens.

Speaking at the launch in Banjul, Immaculada Roca I Cortés described the initiative as a shift from promises to measurable outcomes.

“Today, we are not just launching a digital tool; we move from the language of intent to the language of impact,” she said, urging Ministries, Departments, and Agencies to consistently input accurate and timely data to maximise the system’s effectiveness.

For his part, Mod A.K. Secka, Trade minister, said the platform reinforces government’s commitment to transparency and evidence-based planning.

“This ensures that decisions are guided by reliable data and deliver tangible results for the Gambian people,” he noted.

Funded by the European Union to the tune of €493,346, the system is built on the widely used DHIS2 technology, already operational in The Gambia’s health and education sectors. The platform enables real-time data collection, analysis, and reporting across government institutions.

Officials say the system will track 237 indicators across the seven pillars of the RF-NDP, significantly improving coordination among government agencies while enhancing the quality and timeliness of reporting.

Beyond internal government use, the platform is also expected to promote greater public transparency by making development progress more visible to citizens – an effort aimed at strengthening trust and reinforcing the social contract between the state and the people.

The initiative further includes targeted training for public officials to build long-term capacity in data management and support the country’s transition to Programme-Based Budgeting.

The European Union reaffirmed its continued support for The Gambia’s digital transformation agenda, emphasising inclusive and sustainable development as a key priority.
