ECOWAS confirms launch of new currency in 2027

The newly currency of Economic Community of West African States dubbed Eco will be launched in 2027, according the president of ECOWAS Commission.
Speaking at a closing panel discussion of the maiden Sahel Governance Forum in Banjul, Dr. Omar Omar Touray confirmed that pathway to the launch of the ECOWAS single currency has already been achieved.
“We must include innovative strategies to enhance social cohesion and strengthen citizen–state relations. At the same time, we must prioritize the advancement of governance through stronger democratic institutions—institutions that promote accountability, discipline, and efficient resource management,” Dr. Touray said at the opening event of the forum.
“Discipline and results are values that we cannot overstress. They are not optional; they are fundamental,” he emphasised.
Former president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, said no country can solve the challenges of the Sahel in isolation. “We must build mechanisms that allow us to jointly combat terrorism, promote climate-resilient agriculture, and provide real economic opportunities for our youth—so that they see hope in our soil and not desperation in migration.”
“Let us also harness our demographic dividend. Our youth are not a burden; they are our greatest asset. But for them to rise, we must invest in education, digital access, entrepreneurship, and civic participation.”
He urged regional leaders, policymakers, civil society and the private sector to see the forum not as a conference of speeches, but as a platform of action.
“Let the Sahel Governance Forum become a beacon of commitment, courage, and collaboration. If we govern well, we will not only transform the Sahel—we will inspire the continent.”
