Grief has swept through the media community in Gombe State following the death of seven journalists in a fatal road accident that occurred on Monday evening in the southern part of the state.
The victims were returning from a wedding ceremony where they had gone to support a colleague in the broadcast industry. They were travelling together in a bus when the vehicle was involved in a lone crash along the route in Gombe South.
Preliminary findings suggest that the vehicle may have suffered a tyre failure, causing the driver to lose control. The bus reportedly somersaulted, leading to devastating consequences for those on board.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and confirmed that the crash was severe. Seven passengers were pronounced dead on the spot, while four others sustained varying degrees of injuries and were taken for medical treatment.
Rescue teams remained at the location for several hours, working to recover victims and secure the area. Authorities say a full report will be released once investigations are concluded.
The tragic incident has cast a dark cloud over the journalism community, with colleagues and loved ones mourning professionals who had simply set out to celebrate a joyful moment with one of their own.
The accident adds to growing concerns over road safety, particularly during festive periods when travel increases and roads become more dangerous. Calls for greater caution, vehicle checks, and safer driving practices have once again been renewed in the wake of the heartbreaking loss.
