OFFICE OF THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY MEMBER FOR BANJUL NORTH CONSTITUENCY

STATEMENT OF CONDEMNATION
The Office of the National Assembly Member for Banjul North Constituency is shocked and deeply disturbed by the recent killing of a crocodile and its presentation as a gift to the President of the Republic of The Gambia. We strongly condemn this act, which is not only insensitive to the cultural and ecological significance of crocodiles in our society but also raises serious concerns about respect for wildlife and environmental stewardship.
Crocodiles are an important part of The Gambia’s natural heritage and biodiversity. Their killing, especially for the purpose of a ceremonial or symbolic gift, is unacceptable and contrary to principles of conservation and respect for nature. We recognize the symbolic gesture was likely intended to show respect or goodwill, but such intentions do not justify harming or killing a protected species.
We urge all citizens and stakeholders to respect and protect our wildlife, in line with national and international conservation standards. The National Assembly Member for Banjul North Constituency calls on the relevant authorities to investigate this incident and take appropriate action to ensure accountability for the unnecessary killing of the crocodile.
We also appeal to the community and traditional leaders to promote practices that respect and preserve our natural environment, and to consider alternative ways of expressing goodwill and respect that do not involve harming animals or the environment.
Sincerely,
Hon. Modou Lamin B. Bah
National Assembly Member for Banjul North Constituency
