Nigeria: Johnny Drille opens up about relationship with Church music

By Zuleihat Owuiye, Mamos Nigeria

Nigerian singer and songwriter Johnny Drille has shared his thoughts on why his music doesn’t fit into the traditional church setting. Despite being involved with the church and loving God, Drille never felt his music belonged in church. He occasionally receives invitations to perform in churches, which he finds interesting.

Drille has faced criticism from the Christian community for performing in church settings, despite his music carrying wholesome and uplifting messages. He believes the church shies away from discussing love and suggests that Christian love songs could be a great addition to the genre.

Drille’s experience as a music director helped shape his artistry, even if his style didn’t fit traditional worship genres. He notes that there’s a place for worship music, but the church could explore more themes in their music. Drille’s soulful storytelling and romantic themes have endeared him to fans, and he’s carving out his own unique space in the music industry.
