President Barrow Wraps Up State Visits to Guinea-Bissau, Boosting Cooperation in Multiple Sectors

State House, Banjul, 9th September 2025: The President of the Republic of The Gambia, His Excellency Adama Barrow has successfully concluded his state visit to Guinea-Bissau with enhanced agreements on trade, infrastructure, energy, public health, education and public sector reform between the two countries.
During high-level discussions with his host, His Excellency Umaro Sissoco EMBALÓ, President of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, the two Heads of State reviewed the status of bilateral cooperation between the two sister states and expressed willingness to enhance cooperation in several areas of critical importance to both countries.
They expressed a desire to promote stronger economic and commercial relations between the private sectors, especially through joint procurement of essential commodities.
Presidents Barrow and Sissoco EMBALÓ reflected on security issues with emphasis on crises and conflicts prevention within the continent. The two leaders reiterated their determination to further strengthen their cooperation at the African Union and United Nations levels and to reinforce the shared values of democracy, good governance and respect for human rights.
To solidify the agreements, both countries signed memorandums of understanding on security and trade cooperation. The Minister for Interior Honourable Abdoulie Sanyang and the Minister for Trade, Industry, Regional Cooperation and Employment Honourable Babucarr O. Joof respectively signed on behalf of the Government of The Gambia with their counterparts in Guinea-Bissau.
The trade agreement specifically addresses concerns raised by members of the Gambian community in Guinea-Bissau during a town hall meeting with President Barrow. It will reduce trade barriers and increase trade between the two countries, resulting in industrial development, job creation, economic growth, and the improvement of living standards of the people of both countries.
The President concluded his state visit with a conducted tour of the MC Group flour factory located in the Blola Industrial Zone of Bissau. He was received by Mr. Florentino Fernando Dias, Minister of Industry. Expressing his satisfaction with the factory output, President Barrow encouraged more investment and industrialization in Africa towards food self-sufficiency.
The historic state visit harnessed the immense socio-economic development potential between The Gambia and Guinea-Bissau for the benefit of the young generation.
