Nigeria: Federal Ministry of Environment issues flood alert for 14 states

The Federal Ministry of Environment has issued a flood alert for 14 states in Nigeria, warning that 43 locations may experience heavy rainfall and possible flooding between September 4 and 8, 2025. The affected states include:
Edor, Ikom, Itigidi, Akpap
Kano Gwarzo, Karaye
Zamfara State Anka, Gummi, Kaura Namoda, Maradun, Shinkafi, Bukkuyum
Taraba State Dampar, Duchi, Garkowa, Gassol, Gembu, Gun Gun Bodel, Kambari, Mayo Ranewo, Mutum Biyu, Bandawa, Ngaruwa
Abia State Eziama, Umuahia
Yobe State Geidam, Kanama, Potiskum
Plateau State Langtang, Shendam, Wase
Borno State Ngala
Imo State Okigwe, Otoko
Niger State Sarki Pawa
Sokoto State Sokoto, Wamakko, Isa, Shagari, Makira
Kaduna State Kafanchan
Akwa Ibom State Oron
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency forecasted thunderstorms and rainfall across various parts of the country, with possible flash floods in Bauchi, Jigawa, Katsina, Kaduna, and Kano states.
In response to the impending floods, the Chinese government donated $1 million to support victims in northern states. The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Bagudu, signed the exchange notes with the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, assuring that the grant would be managed transparently to ensure accountability.
The government has urged stakeholders to take necessary precautions to minimize the impact of the floods, emphasizing the importance of preparedness and timely response to mitigate the effects of flooding.
