Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has expressed deep concern over the alarming rate of senseless killings and insecurity in Nigeria. Citing Amnesty International’s report, Obi stated that over 10,000 lives have been lost to terrorists, bandits, and other criminal gangs in just two years under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

The insecurity situation in Nigeria has worsened, with new armed gangs emerging and daily incidents of killing, abduction, and banditry. According to Obi, the recent attack in Okigwe, Imo State, which claimed many lives, reflects the alarming insecurity reality in the country. Amnesty International has also warned that the Nigerian government’s failure to protect citizens is emboldening.

Obi emphasized that the first duty of any government is to secure the lives and property of its people. He urged politicians and leaders to put Nigerian citizens first and focus on addressing the real issues. The nation needs to wake up and demand action to tackle the insecurity crisis.

The insecurity situation in Nigeria has led to a humanitarian crisis, with millions of people affected. The crisis has also had a significant impact on the economy, with many businesses closing down or relocating due to the insecurity.

To address the insecurity crisis, the government needs to take a comprehensive approach that includes:

Providing adequate funding, training, and equipment to security agencies to enable them to effectively tackle the insecurity challenge.

Implementing policies to reduce poverty and unemployment, which are major drivers of insecurity in the country.

Encouraging community policing and partnership between law enforcement agencies and citizens to identify and address security threats.
