A serious road accident at Toyota Bus Stop, inward Oshodi, Lagos, has left five people injured after a petrol tanker collided with a commercial bus.

The incident happened on Thursday, close to The Guardian newspaper headquarters. According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the crash involved a PMS-laden tanker (registration T28128LA) and a fully loaded Volkswagen T4 commercial bus (GGE 526 YG).

Preliminary police reports from Oloto Division revealed that the tanker suffered sudden brake failure while speeding. It lost control and slammed into the moving bus.

LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs, Adebayo Taofiq, said officers “executed a swift and well-coordinated rescue operation,” saving three women, two men — including the bus driver — from the wreckage.

One victim was rushed to hospital by a passerby, while the Lagos State Ambulance Service and LASEMA’s Rescue Unit took the others for emergency treatment.

LASTMA’s General Manager, Bakare-Oki, expressed sympathy to the victims and wished them quick recovery. He blamed the crash on excessive speeding and poor vehicle maintenance.

“Heavy-duty vehicle operators, especially tanker drivers, must keep their vehicles in top mechanical shape, paying close attention to brakes,” he warned.

He also urged truck owners to provide continuous training for their drivers, stressing that “the sanctity of human life must be the top priority in road transport.”
