Nigeria: National Assembly pays tribute to late president Buhari

The National Assembly held separate but emotionally charged sessions to honor the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on July 24, 2025, in a London hospital at the age of 82. Lawmakers in both the Senate and House of Representatives paid glowing tributes to the late leader, calling on President Bola Tinubu to immortalize him by naming a national monument after him.

Senate Leader Michael Opeyemi Bamidele described Buhari as a courageous officer who rose to the peak of his military career and later became a democratically elected President who led the country for eight years. Former Senate President Ahmad Lawan praised Buhari’s consistency, saying he was a leader who “stood for something in the history of Nigeria’s politics.”

A condolence register was opened at the National Assembly for lawmakers and visitors to pay their respects. The Senate commended President Tinubu for ensuring a befitting state funeral for the late former President.

In the House of Representatives, lawmakers also paid heartfelt tributes to Buhari, highlighting his leadership and respect for institutional independence. Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu said Buhari’s leadership deepened Nigeria’s democratic process and respect for institutional independence.

Lawmakers recalled Buhari’s notable achievements, including signing 129 bills into law, such as the Not Too Young to Run Act, Petroleum Industry Act, and Nigeria Startup Act. They also praised his anti-corruption efforts and modest lifestyle.

The National Assembly urged President Tinubu to immortalize Buhari by naming a national monument after him, in recognition of his contributions to Nigeria’s development. The session concluded with prayers for the repose of Buhari’s soul and strength for his family.
