THE FOUNDING FATHERS OF OUR INDEPENDENCE.

By: Ndey Jobarteh

As we mark 60 years of Independence from the British, we must move beyond celebration and into deep reflection. Independence was never just about political freedom, it was a promise of self determination, economic prosperity, good governance, and social justice. The question we must ask today is: Has that promise been fulfilled? Are we close to achieving it??

For six decades, Gambians have remained resilient, navigating political instability, economic hardship, and social inequalities. Yet, many of the struggles our forefathers fought against persist today. Corruption, unemployment, and a lack of opportunities continue to push our brightest minds out of the country.

True independence is not just about being free from colonial rule, it is about building a nation where every citizen has the opportunity to thrive. It is about:
Governance that serves the people, not personal interests. We must demand transparency, accountability, and leadership that prioritizes development over politics.

Youth empowerment that creates opportunities at home. The future of The Gambia depends on its young people, yet too many are struggling without jobs, proper education, or platforms to lead. A country that does not invest in its youth has no future.

Economic independence that moves beyond reliance on aid and remittances. Sixty years later, we must ask: Why is The Gambia still struggling to stand on its own economically? We need, policies that support entrepreneurship, innovation, and local industries.

Social justice that ensures equality and dignity for all.Whether it is access to education, healthcare, or opportunities, no Gambian should feel like a stranger in their own country.

As we reflect on 60 years of independence, we must commit to shaping the next 60 with boldness, urgency, and a clear vision. The future of The Gambia is in our hands, and it is our duty to ensure that the next generation inherits a nation that truly lives up to the ideals of independence.

Let this be a turning point, not just a milestone. Let this be the moment we say, Enough of the past, we are building a new Gambia.
