Essa Bokar Sey condemns President Barrow attempt to go for third term

By Sulayman Waan

Essa Bokar Sey, former Deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Gambia Office has condemned President Barrow pronouncement to run for a third-term.

In a message shared with his followers, Sey said: “I do not support a 3rd term agenda for the incumbent, nor will I ever support it for any future leader in The Gambia, Inshaa Allah.”

Recently, the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) named President Barrow as its standard bearer for the 2026 presidential election and Barrow himself vowed to win the election.

However, Mr. Sey called on all Gambians to reject attempts to extend his presidential terms.

He urged his audience-viewers, fans, and admirers to stand firm against such agendas, asserting that pushing for multiple terms undermines democratic governance.

He referenced the consensus among experts regarding the detrimental effects of not establishing or respecting term limits in constitutions, stating that these practices contribute significantly to political instability in West Africa.

“Not introducing term limits, not respecting them, and tampering with constitutions are core causes of instability in the region,” he noted.

“I want to be on record. I do not support a 3rd term agenda for the incumbent in The Gambia and I will never support it for any other leader who comes after the current one,” he reiterated.
