Nigeria: Cute Abiola condemns alleged police brutality in Kwara

By Zuleihat Owuiye, Nigeria

Nigerian content creator Cute Abiola has spoken out against alleged police brutality in Kwara State, accusing some officers of harassing and assaulting residents and urging authorities to take action.

The entertainer expressed his concerns in a video shared on his Instagram page, where he said he had personally witnessed incidents of police harassment in the state. He insisted that the alleged misconduct must stop and called on residents to speak up when they experience mistreatment.

According to Cute Abiola, he has raised concerns about the issue on several occasions and held discussions with both former and current Commissioners of Police in Kwara State in an effort to address the situation.

He, however, expressed disappointment that reports of alleged police brutality continued to emerge despite assurances from police authorities that the problem had been addressed.

The content creator explained that young people had continued to reach out to him with complaints, while videos circulating on social media also appeared to show incidents of police harassment.

Cute Abiola disclosed that the current Commissioner of Police had told him that some of the videos being shared online were old recordings. He added that the commissioner explained that the officers involved belonged to a tactical team.

However, the entertainer maintained that he had personally witnessed some of the incidents, stressing that the problem could not be dismissed solely on the grounds that certain videos were old.

He also noted that some of the officers involved allegedly operated in plain clothes, making it difficult for residents to identify them.

Expressing his frustration, Cute Abiola called for an immediate end to the alleged misconduct and shared contact details residents could use to report incidents of harassment.

“From now on, this must stop in Kwara, and I want to drop some numbers that you can call in case the police harass you. They have no right to collect your phone,” he said.

He encouraged residents who encounter such situations to contact the Commissioner of Police and the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) to report their experiences.

The content creator also provided the contact details of his personal assistant, giving affected residents another channel through which they could seek assistance.

Cute Abiola emphasised that residents should be able to go about their daily activities without fear of intimidation or mistreatment by law enforcement officers.

He further called for Kwara State to remain a peaceful and harmonious place, insisting that allegations of police brutality should be treated seriously and addressed to prevent further complaints.

The video has drawn attention to concerns about police conduct in the state, with Cute Abiola using his platform to encourage accountability and provide residents with channels for reporting alleged abuses.

He urged the relevant authorities to ensure that officers carry out their duties professionally and respect the rights of members of the public.
