The Government Owns The Data. So Why can’t The Court Get The Records?

by Ndey Jobarteh

According to The Fatu Network, Gambia Immigration Department Acting Public Relations Officer Ansumana Cham has confirmed that the Government of The Gambia has full ownership and control of the country’s National ID data. I welcome this clarification.

But the central question remains unanswered!

If the Government owns and controls the data, why were the records requested by lawyer Ya Kumba Jaiteh reportedly inaccessible during the Revising Court proceedings?

Who is responsible for producing these records before the court?

The Ministry of Interior, The Gambia., must clarify this matter and ensure that the relevant records are made available through the proper legal procedures.

We can no longer accept a situation where every legitimate question about transparency, accountability and the functioning of our public institutions is dismissed as partisan politics or hostility.

Ownership means responsibility! Control must come with accountability! The court needs evidence, not competing explanations.
