Nigeria: FG begins construction of new national control centre to strengthen Nigeria’s power grid

The Federal Government has commenced construction of a new National Control Centre for the Nigerian Independent System Operator in Osogbo, Osun State, as part of efforts to improve the reliability, security and management of the country’s electricity grid.

The new facility is expected to replace the existing control centre, which has been in operation for 64 years. Authorities say the project will provide a more modern system for monitoring and managing electricity transmission across Nigeria.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held on Wednesday and was performed on behalf of Vice-President Kashim Shettima by his Special Adviser on Legal and Compliance Matters, Alhaji Bashir Maidugu. The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, was also present at the ceremony.

According to a statement issued by the minister’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Adeola Labzy, the project is part of broader government efforts to address challenges affecting electricity supply across the country.

The statement explained that the new control centre would strengthen the ability of the Independent System Operator to monitor the national grid and respond more effectively to incidents that could affect electricity transmission and distribution.

The ageing control facility has long served as an important part of Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure. However, the government believes that its replacement is necessary to meet the demands of a modern and increasingly complex power system.

The new centre is expected to incorporate modern technology that will improve real-time monitoring of the national grid and provide operators with better tools to manage power generation and transmission.

Speaking on the importance of the project, the government said strengthening the country’s power infrastructure remains critical to improving electricity supply and supporting economic activities.

Nigeria’s electricity sector has faced several challenges over the years, including grid instability, transmission limitations, equipment failures and repeated system collapses. These challenges have affected households, businesses and industries that depend on a stable supply of electricity.

The construction of the new control centre is therefore being viewed as an important step towards improving the operational capacity of the national grid.

The Independent System Operator plays a central role in coordinating electricity flows within the Nigerian power system. A modern control centre would give system operators improved access to information needed to monitor grid conditions and coordinate responses during emergencies.

The government also expects the facility to contribute to improved grid security by strengthening the systems used to monitor electricity operations.

Officials said the project forms part of ongoing measures to address weaknesses within the power sector and create a more dependable electricity system for Nigerians.

The Osogbo facility will consequently serve as a major component of efforts to modernise Nigeria’s electricity grid and improve the country’s capacity to manage its power infrastructure.

As construction progresses, attention will be focused on the completion of the project and how effectively the new facility improves the monitoring, coordination and overall management of Nigeria’s national electricity grid.
