Miriam Haley has spoken about the lasting impact of her sexual assault after former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein was sentenced to 15 years in prison over the 2006 attack.

Haley addressed the court before Weinstein was sentenced, describing the emotional and psychological consequences she said she had experienced since the assault and the difficult journey she undertook in seeking justice.

She told the court that the experience had fundamentally changed her sense of safety and continued to affect her life years after the incident.

“Being sexually assaulted by Harvey Weinstein has had a devastating effect on my life and sense of security that may never go away,” Haley said.

She also described the fear and scrutiny that accompanied her decision to speak publicly about the assault.

“It’s a life sentence for me,” she said, referring to the continuing impact of what she experienced.

Weinstein, 74, was sentenced following his conviction at a retrial in New York. The case dates back to an incident involving Haley, who was working as a television production assistant when the assault occurred in 2006.

The former film producer maintained his innocence during the sentencing proceedings. While addressing the court, Weinstein expressed remorse over the pain Haley said she had suffered but continued to deny committing the offence.

“I do have remorse for Miriam Haley’s pain, but I have to reiterate my innocence,” Weinstein said.

The latest sentence follows years of legal proceedings surrounding allegations of sexual misconduct against Weinstein, whose case became one of the most closely watched criminal cases associated with the #MeToo movement.

Weinstein was originally sentenced to 23 years in prison in New York. However, that conviction was overturned by New York’s highest court in 2024, leading to a retrial.

During the retrial, prosecutors again presented evidence concerning Haley’s allegations. The jury ultimately found Weinstein guilty in connection with the assault involving Haley.

He was, however, acquitted of a separate charge involving former model Kaja Sokola.

Jurors were unable to reach a verdict on another rape charge involving Jessica Mann, leaving that part of the case unresolved.

Weinstein’s legal troubles also extend beyond New York. He is serving a separate 16-year sentence in California following a rape conviction there.

The New York proceedings have kept attention focused on the experiences of women who accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct and on the wider debate surrounding accountability for powerful figures in the entertainment industry.

For Haley, however, the court proceedings have been about more than the legal outcome.

Her statement highlighted the long-term consequences that survivors of sexual assault may experience even after a criminal case reaches a conclusion.

By telling the court that the effects of the assault could remain with her for life, Haley emphasised that a prison sentence does not necessarily erase the emotional consequences of trauma.

Her comments also reflected the difficulties she said she faced while seeking justice and dealing with public attention surrounding the case.

Weinstein’s defence has continued to dispute the allegations against him, while prosecutors have maintained that the evidence supported the conviction.

The sentencing marks another significant development in a legal saga that has lasted for years and involved multiple jurisdictions.

The case has also drawn international attention because of Weinstein’s former position as one of Hollywood’s most influential producers. His career included involvement in numerous successful films before allegations of sexual misconduct against him became public.

The allegations against Weinstein helped fuel the global #MeToo movement, which encouraged many women to publicly discuss experiences of sexual harassment and assault.

Since then, his legal battles have continued through appeals, convictions, retrials and separate proceedings in New York and California.

Haley’s statement before the latest sentencing brought the focus back to the personal consequences of the case.

Rather than describing the matter simply as the conclusion of a criminal proceeding, she spoke about the lasting effect the assault has had on her life and sense of security.

The 15-year prison sentence therefore represents another chapter in a long-running legal process, while Haley’s remarks underline the continuing personal impact of the events that led to the case.

Weinstein remains subject to his separate California sentence, meaning the New York judgment is not the only prison term connected to his criminal convictions.
