Nigeria: Chelsea sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa on long-term deal

Chelsea have completed the signing of England forward Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, with the 23-year-old joining the Blues on a contract running until 2033.
The Premier League club announced the transfer on Wednesday, confirming that Rogers will link up with head coach Xabi Alonso’s squad ahead of the 2026/27 season.
“I’m so excited. For me, Chelsea are the biggest club in London and a club I’ve always admired since I was a kid,” he said.
“I’m really excited about the project with the new manager, the players we’ve got and where the club is heading. That’s why I’m here and I can’t wait to get started.”
The forward becomes one of Chelsea’s key attacking additions for the new campaign as Alonso looks to build a squad capable of challenging for both domestic and European honours.
Rogers arrives at Stamford Bridge after two and a half seasons at Aston Villa where he established himself as one of the league’s most promising attackers.
During his time at Villa Park, he made 85 Premier League appearances and was directly involved in 40 league goals through a combination of goals and assists.
His creativity, pace, and ability to play across the front line made him a regular starter under Unai Emery. Rogers played a key role as Villa secured a top-four finish and then went on to win the UEFA Europa League last season — the club’s first major European trophy in over 40 years.
Villa fans will be disappointed to lose a player who had become central to their attack, but the move represents a significant step up for Rogers and a major statement from Chelsea in the transfer market.
He made his senior England debut in November 2024 and has since become a regular in the Three Lions setup. He now has 22 caps for England and was part of the squad that represented the country at this summer’s FIFA World Cup.
At 23, he brings both Premier League experience and international pedigree to a Chelsea side that is blending youth with established talent.
The signing fits with the profile Chelsea have targeted since Xabi Alonso took over as head coach. Alonso has spoken about wanting dynamic, versatile attackers who can press, create, and score.
Rogers can operate as a central striker, on either wing, or as a number 10 — flexibility that will give Alonso multiple options in attack. His work rate off the ball and direct running style also suit the high-intensity approach Alonso is implementing at Cobham.
Chelsea have been rebuilding their attack over the last two windows, and Rogers’ arrival adds both immediate quality and long-term potential. With a contract until 2033, the club clearly view him as a central part of their project.
The move is expected to spark competition for places in Chelsea’s front line. The Blues already have a mix of young forwards and experienced internationals, but Rogers’ Premier League record suggests he can slot in immediately.
For Chelsea supporters, his comments about the club being “the biggest in London” will go down well. The rivalry with Arsenal and Tottenham has intensified in recent years, and signing a player who openly backs Chelsea’s status in the city sends a clear message.
Rogers will now join preseason training with Alonso’s group as preparations begin for the 2026/27 season. Chelsea are expected to compete on four fronts again, and depth in attack will be crucial.
Rogers’ journey has been rapid. After coming through the academy system and having loan spells early in his career, he broke through at Villa and quickly became one of the most talked-about English attackers.
Winning the Europa League with Villa last season gave him a taste of silverware, but the chance to join Chelsea — a club with multiple Premier League titles and two Champions League trophies — was too big to turn down.
“I’ve admired Chelsea since I was a kid,” he repeated. “To now get the chance to play here, with this manager and this group, it’s massive for me.
Chelsea will be hoping Rogers can replicate and even improve on his Villa numbers in blue. With 40 goal contributions in 85 Premier League games already, the expectation will be for him to become a consistent 15-to-20 goal-a-season player.
For England, his move to a bigger club and Champions League football should only help his development ahead of future international tournaments.
Alonso now has another attacking weapon to work with as Chelsea aim to close the gap at the top of the Premier League and make a deep run in Europe.
The 2026/27 season is still weeks away, but with Rogers’ signing confirmed, Chelsea have made it clear they intend to compete — and that the 23-year-old wants to be at the heart of it.
