Nigeria: Javier Bardem honored with hand and footprint ceremony in Hollywood

By Zuleihat Owuiye, Nigeria

Academy Award winner Javier Bardem was immortalized in Hollywood this week, leaving his handprints, footprints and an unusual personal touch — a nose print — in wet cement at the TCL Chinese Theatre.

The ceremony, held on Tuesday, July 13, 2026, added Bardem to a lineup of film icons whose marks have been preserved at the landmark venue for nearly a century.

Speaking in front of guests, industry peers and media, Bardem called the honor humbling.

t’s difficult to believe I’m joining so many celebrated figures who have stood on this same spot,” he said. “To be recognized like this, in a place that represents the history of cinema, is something I will carry with me for the rest of my life.”

The tradition of placing handprints and footprints in cement at the Chinese Theatre dates back to 1927. It has honored stars from Charlie Chaplin to Meryl Streep.

Bardem followed the tradition, pressing both hands and feet into the slab. Then he added something new. He pressed his nose into the cement, the first time an actor has done so at the ceremony. The gesture drew laughter and applause from the crowd.

The actor, 56, said the lighthearted moment reflected how he approaches his work: with seriousness about the craft, but without taking himself too seriously

Bardem was recognized for a career that has moved fluidly between Spanish and international cinema for more than 30 years.

He first gained global attention in the 1990s with Spanish films such as _Jamón Jamón_ and _Live Flesh_. His breakthrough in Hollywood came with _Before Night Falls_ in 2000, which earned him his first Oscar nomination.

He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2008 for his chilling role as Anton Chigurh in the Coen Brothers’ _No Country for Old Men_. Other notable credits include _Biutiful_,

In recent years Bardem has continued to balance big studio projects with more intimate films. He starred in the television series _Cape Fear_ and appeared in _F1: The Movie_.

Looking ahead, he has two major releases. _The Beloved_ is scheduled to premiere in Spain in August 2026. He will also return as Stilgar in _Dune: Part Three_, expected in theaters in December 2026.

He spoke about his wife, actress Penélope Cruz, calling her both a partner and a creative inspiration. He also acknowledged their two children, Leo and Luna, saying their support has grounded him through the highs and lows of a life in film.

Cruz was in attendance at the ceremony, along with other friends and collaborators from both Spain and Hollywood.

“Anything I have achieved, I have not done alone,” Bardem said. “My family has been the heart of it.”

The ceremony was more than a personal milestone. It also highlighted the growing influence of international actors in Hollywood.

Born in Las Palmas, Canary Islands, Bardem was raised in a family of actors. He began performing as a child and went on to become one of Spain’s most successful exports to American film.

Film historians note that his inclusion at the Chinese Theatre reflects how the definition of a “Hollywood star” has broadened. Today, the landmark honors artists from around the world whose work has shaped global cinema.

Bardem addressed that directly in his remarks, saying he hoped his presence would encourage young actors from Spain, Latin America, and other countries to see Hollywood as a place where diverse stories.
