Nigeria: Nigerians back governor Bago’s call for single term

Nigerians are rallying behind Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State’s proposal for a single term for governors and the president, citing it as a way to end corruption and focus on governance. The governor made the call, stating that the pursuit of a second term had hindered his ability to make tough decisions.
Supporters argue that a single term would allow leaders to prioritize long-term development over short-term gains and reduce the influence of money in politics. Senator Adolphus Wabara said it would end “monumental corruption and waste associated with second term bids”.
However, some experts caution that a single term could lead to complacency or recklessness, and that institutional reforms are needed to ensure accountability. Others suggest a modified system, like Chile and Uruguay, where incumbents aren’t allowed to preside over elections.
