Barrow vows tough action against migration agents after deadly boat tragedy
President Adama Barrow, has issued a stern warning that all individuals found wanting or involved in the deadly irregular migration incident off the coast of Ginack village will be dealt with in accordance with the law, as the nation mourns lives lost in yet another perilous ‘backway’ journey to Europe.
He also announced that the government will launch a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
In a national address, the President confirmed that the tragic accident occurred around midnight on 31st December 2025, when a boat reportedly carrying irregular migrants capsized off the coast of Ginack village in the North Bank Region.
According to the President, 102 persons have so far been rescued, with several victims currently under urgent medical care. He disclosed that seven bodies have been recovered, while search and rescue operations remained ongoing to locate those still unaccounted for.
The President announced that the national emergency response plan has been activated, with the government deploying adequate resources to intensify rescue efforts and provide immediate assistance to survivors. He reassured families anxiously awaiting news that they are not alone, noting that the entire nation grieves with them during this painful moment.
While extending condolences to the bereaved families on behalf of the government and the people of The Gambia, the President expressed profound gratitude to the personnel of The Gambia Navy for their swift and courageous response.
He said they acted promptly upon receiving the distress alert, putting their own lives at risk to save others. Commendations were also extended to delegated emergency response agencies and security personnel who supported the operations professionally and urgently.
The President further praised health workers, including doctors, nurses, paramedics and staff of the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital, for working tirelessly to treat the injured.
He described their “compassion and sacrifice as a reminder of the best of humanity.” Appreciation was equally extended to community volunteers and local fishermen who selflessly assisted in the rescue efforts.
Describing the incident as a painful reminder of the dangerous and life-threatening nature of irregular migration, the President stressed that “no dream, journey or promise is worth a single loss of life at sea.” He reaffirmed the government’s firm commitment to preventing irregular migration and its determination to create safer and more dignified opportunities for young people through development initiatives, jobs and livelihood options at home.
He urged citizens to remain calm, supportive and compassionate as security and humanitarian agencies continue rescue operations, adding that updates on the identities, nationalities and verified details of the victims will be provided when available.
