Officers of the Nigeria Customs Service have stopped a major attempt to illegally move donkey skins out of the country after intercepting 718 pieces in Bauchi State. The seizure, carried out by the Federal Operations Unit in the zone, highlights ongoing efforts to protect Nigeria’s wildlife and enforce laws banning the trade.
Speaking in Bauchi, Customs officials explained that the confiscated skins are valued at over ₦24 million. The operation, they said, is part of a firm stance against smuggling and the exploitation of endangered animals. Two people linked to the consignment were arrested and are expected to face prosecution under existing customs and environmental laws.
Customs authorities described the interception as a strong reminder that illegal wildlife trade harms both the environment and the nation’s economy. They also credited improved cooperation with other security agencies for helping to uncover and disrupt smuggling networks. Residents were encouraged to support these efforts by sharing useful information that could help stop similar activities in the future.
